I introduce a clear concept for the student to learn.
The student then explores and practises the concept through fun, engaging chess exercises and mini-games we play together.
I observe closely, check for understanding, and offer encouraging, constructive feedback to help the student grow.
Studies show that children can begin benefiting from chess as early as age three. Lessons are tailored to each student’s age and ability. This includes pre-school, prep and primary school through to high school. I also teach uni students and adults.

Yes—many students start with zero experience. Lessons are designed to build confidence from the very first session.

There are four zones a student can be in during a lesson: bored, comfortable, learning, or overwhelmed. My goal is to keep them in the “learning zone” so they’re challenged but not stressed. As we go, I keep an eye on what zone the student is in and I steer them back to the learning zone. I do this by paying close attention to how the student feels and responds. From there, I offer clear guidance, adjust the difficulty in real time, and use fun, engaging activities that match their pace.
If you need to cancel or reschedule, please give at least 48 hours’ notice. Cancellations made 24–48 hours before the lesson are charged at 50%, and cancellations within 24 hours (or no-shows) are charged the full fee.
I understand that illness and genuine emergencies happen. In those cases, there will be no charge.
Yes, I recommend practice between sessions. I provide fun, age-appropriate games and puzzles that help reinforce what we’ve learned without feeling like homework.
